Unknown / WHS / Robertstock, Northwest Airlines Anniversary. Northwest Airlines celebrated the 50th anniversary of its around-the-globe service to the Orient at Minneapolis Airport in 1997. For this event the airline displayed a DC-4, the aircraft that originally flew the Orient route, and a 747, the plane that flew the route in 1997. Ironically, as indicated by the name on the airline hangar, Northwest no longer used the Northwest Orient Airlines name. The Douglas DC-4 was a larger version of the DC-3 that was successful as a commercial airplane and as the C-54 transport during World War II and the Berlin Airlift. The 747 series, which was introduced by Boeing in 1970, was then the worlds largest passenger airplane. The promotional campaign for this anniversary was submitted in an award competition of the Public Relations Society of America. The PRSA records are available for research at the Wisconsin Historical Society Archives. |
McVicar, Angus B., 1903-1964 / WHS / Robertstock, Northwest Airways Special Delivery. In an obvious publicity stunt, a Northwest Airways pilot delivers the first case of post-Prohibition Atlas Beer to Madison distributor Ira Chambers. The shipments from Atlas Brewing Co. in Chicago went to President Franklin Roosevelt and other prominent individuals, and they constituted the largest airplane shipment to date. Northwest Airlines began in 1926 as Northwest Airways, and it changed its name to Northwest Airlines in 1934. |
